Presenting the Viceroy, at Altitude

Ski in, ski out, wax on, wax off. Whether you’re headed out to grab first tracks and a snack to go from the new Nest Bar and Café, you're a guest at the hotel wrapping up the ski day or you’re a friend stopping by for a poolside drink, around the fireplace, the Viceroy Snowmass offers complimentary ski waxing while you’re enjoying the view. The newly opened Viceroy Snowmass offers luxury and service by intuition; they strive to know what you need, before you do. If you’re in the lobby with a case of the sniffles, the staff may send a bowl of chicken soup to your room, just because they noticed. A lot of thought goes into why you might need something, and when; they take care of the who, what and the how.

Located just under the chair on Assay Hill, the pool and patio are an extension of the hill. The outdoor firepits come to life only after the lifts close, around après-time (to guard against singed ski tips, no doubt.) So no need to jump from the chair, the action isn’t going anywhere. Music and DJs will flank the slopeside patio for the surround sound après experience, with some acts doing double duty at Bellyup Aspen and the Viceroy, throughout the season. For the wonderful world of cozy and couches, upstairs and inside – floor 4, to be exact - there’s the comfortably chic Eight K, funky, eclectically lit and decorated to inspire social interaction.

And then there are the cocktails. The Floradora seems to be a semi-tropical favorite, while the Sazerac combines rye whiskey, bitters and absinthe rinse, the kind of thing your granddad might enjoy in his study with a fine cigar. Lightweights be warned; but certainly warmed. If you’re feeling peckish, the Lollipop Chicken wings have a smoky, zesty flavor and can truly be eaten by the stem i.e. chicken wing tip. Very civilized and super delicious. The edamame are flavorful and the yellowtail sashimi give you a great bit of fresh fish, a little bit of grilled pineapple, and a touch of fried, tempura asparagus. With a jalapeno on top.

Depending on your appetite, Eight K has S, M and L offerings, with starters, soups, salads and sandwiches throughout the day. Breakfast benedicts, steel cut oatmeal and all manner of culinary cravings are satisfied, thanks to that intuitive sense of what you might be in the mood for at any given hour.

Luxury becomes synonymous with ambiance: bathroom shades change from translucent to opaque, depending on your whim, fire elements abound in the lobby, while water elements flow through the lower levels. From the hand-picked coffee table books and countertop artifacts to the diamond-shaped tile walls in the bathroom, strangely reminiscent of Alice in Wonderland, the unexpected touches are signature Viceroy, elegance outside the box.

The Viceroy Snowmass is the only above sea level Viceroy location; the others reign at lower elevations and sandier locations in Palm Springs, Santa Monica, Anguilla and Miami. Justin Timberlake’s clothing line brings sexy back - or to the corner - of the lobby, while the spa zone brings some seaside humidity to the dry mountain air, steam rising and filling the senses the minute you round the corner. Out in the hallways, dimmed lighting, aromatherapy and specially selected music provide a contrast to the energetic day on the hill and carry you serenely to your next destination.

But remember: newly waxed skis are fast. Only one Sazerac while you wait.
