La Cantina

It is not difficult to find La Cantina: look for the only adobe building on Main Street. Located in Downtown Aspen across from the Hotel Jerome, La Cantina is a muy caliente hang out for margaritas, nachos, and enchiladas, even when it’s blustery and cold in the middle of the winter. Since 1985, ski bums and tourist have been enjoying La Cantina’s zesty Mexican dishes, tequila flights, and monster-sized margaritas.

In the summer, there is a spacious patio to spread out and people watch in the late afternoon sun. During the day, families munch on generous plates of nachos heaped with cheese, homemade guacamole, salsa fresco, and jalapeños. La Cantina offers some of the best authentic ceviche in town, including a refreshing and light blackened-ahi ceviche in avocado and salsa.

La Cantina is a four-season tequila and taco joint, proving plenty of south-of-the-border flavors and funky nightlife. Guests can replenish with mountainous servings of traditional Tex-Mex favorites like chimichangas, burritos, fajitas, chile rellenos, chipolte taquitos, and spicy carnitas. Guests with a gargantuan appetite will enjoy La Cantina’s creative entrees and piquant seasonal dishes with genuine gastronome appeal. The featured menu items are creative riffs on traditional Mexican fare like fiery mezcal marinated pork tenderloin in a prickly pear cactus chutney or chile-rubbed scallops with spicy chorizo, mango salsa, and grilled asparagus. Diners will have their taste buds abuzz with “The Drunken Duck,” a tender duck breast seasoned with a chile crust and grilled in blue agave tequila.

When the sun goes down, the party heats up in this casual adobe shack. If you came for the evening fiesta of margaritas and tequila, La Cantina provides unlimited chips and salsa on the house. The margarita glasses are aquarium-sized, so you’re limited to only two. Combine a fishbowl of agave tequila with the thin air of Aspen’s 8,000-foot elevation and you’ll understand – and feel – why. There are nine specialty margaritas, including the outstanding “Vegas,” a combination of Sauza Gold and Negro Modelo Cerveza, with delicate splashes of lime. La Cantina features over 125 brands of tequila and mezcal mixes readily available for shots, including the ultra smooth premium and exotic super-premium blends. The true tequila aficionado will reach for the reserved blends, which include the 44-dollars-a-shot Don Julio Real, a super premium Anejo tequila. For groups, a seven shot flight can be served in a ski.

After shots of tequila, mezcal, and a belly full of Mexican food, you’re bound to bounce out of La Cantina saying “hasta la vista” with spirits higher than Ajax Mountain. La Cantina is a lively experience, even if you need to settle in for a siesta afterwards.
